Howard To Be Featured on Sun Sports Original Series
June 6, 2007
Orlando - Sun Sports announced today that Orlando Magic forward Dwight Howard will be featured in its original series, "IN MY OWN WORDS PRESENTED BY AT&T".
With only three years under his belt playing in the NBA, this young phenomenon has become the team’s franchise player. Fans will get to see Howard’s great sense of humor as he sat down recently for a light-hearted interview with series host Whit Watson.
IN MY OWN WORDS: DWIGHT HOWARD premieres statewide on Sun Sports Monday, June 11 at 7:30pm (ET). Encore presentations are scheduled for later that night at 11pm; June 12, 10:30am and 6:30pm; June 13, 11pm; June 18, 7pm and 11pm; June 19, 10am; and June 19, 6pm.
During the 2004-05 season, Howard became the first player drafted directly from high school to start all 82 games as a rookie. He was also the youngest player in league history to average a double-double. This past season (2006-07), he was named to his first NBA All-Star team and earned All-NBA Third Team honors.
Howard credits his family upbringing and schooling for giving him the foundation on which he now stands. Howard shares memories from his old school, Southwest Atlanta Christian Academy, which he attended since he was five years old and gives insight as to what it was like to enter the NBA as a young player.
Quotes from “In My Own Words: Dwight Howard” on Sun Sports
Whit Watson: “If you had gone to college you would be graduating now. What do you think you would have studied?”
Dwight Howard: “I would have probably majored in computer technology, I love dealing with computers.”
WW: “Would you agree that it was a good decision to entry the NBA directly out of high school?”
DH: “Yes, I’m glad I made that decision. I’m in a wonderful city like Orlando and I’m having a lot of fun.”
WW: “How in the world did the sticker on the back board not win the slam dunk contest? (when he competed in the contest during the 2007 NBA All-Star Weekend)
DH: “I don’t know…It was a great dunk and I was really hurt by the decision the judges made but you live and you learn. I will be in the dunk contest next year and I have some dunks where they’ll have to give it to me.”
WW: “What style of basketball do you think the Magic’s next head coach should have that would best fit the players in Orlando right now?
DH: “We have a young team…I think we need a coach who will come in and just let us play, let us have fun, but at the same time teach us. We need a coach we can talk to about anything, somebody you can have a relationship with.”
WW: “When you do want to ‘get away’ from basketball what do you do?”
DH: “I like to bowl. I like to dance, I’m a big dancer; I like to have fun. I like seeing smiles on people’s faces.”
WW: “What is one of your favorite nick-names?
DH: “Thunder cat is one of my favorites; the Daily Double and the Young Aristotle.”
WW: “Is it challenging to be a Christian and be a professional athlete?”
DH: “No it’s not. My teammates and I, we pray together – before every meal, they make sure that I pray before every game, they don’t have any problems with it. It’s good for everybody.”
IN MY OWN WORDS turns the studio lights on prominent Florida sports personalities, devoted to one subject the show centers on a sit-down interview with that person. But in a departure from the traditional interview format, Sun Sports will air each segment with little editing, allowing interviews to be seen in the natural flow in which they happened. Each week’s episode of the new series will be fresh and up-to-date and the interviews will be conducted just a few days prior, either in Sun Sports’ studios or on-location.
